Getting A U S Passport Is A Lot Easier Than You May Think

When you make plans to visit another country, even for a weekend, a United States passport is required. While Canada, some Caribbean locations and Mexico formerly needed only a birth certificate and standard, valid identification for entry and exit, an increased need for security changed the rules. If you do not have one, getting a passport is not difficult or complicated.

The Application

You can pick up the latest application form at the post office or download one at home. If you choose to use the on-line method, be sure to use matte-finish 8 1/2 X 11 inch medium weight paper. If any kind of shiny paper is used, the entry will be rejected. Also, any damage such as rips or holes, even from staples, is not acceptable. The copy must be in black and white. There are applications for getting an urgent passport.

DS-11 Form

DS-11, as the forms are called officially, must be filed in person for first-time applicants. This rule also applies to those with a lapsed document, one that has been stolen or when a name changes. Those applying from another country or who are under the age of 16 must also meet certain requirements but filing by mail is possible for many people.

At the government website, you may enter the pertinent information and then print. If you print first, complete the form by hand in black ink on one-sided pages. First-time applicants should not sign the form until submitting it at an acceptance facility, which the government has designated at locations such as the post office, some public libraries, court clerk offices and any other local governmental offices.

Proof Of Citizenship

Valid proof of United States citizenship is an absolute requirement. An older passport that is still unaltered or damaged in any way will be accepted as identification but many people are required to present a certified birth certificate. Those lacking this certificate of birth or who only have a copy of one may obtain a valid document from their county, city or state of birth.

If a certificate was never issued, you were born abroad or became a naturalized citizen, the government website can explain your options and requirements. Additionally, most applicants need to present a valid driver’s license or other current identification such as military or government ID. A photograph must be presented that shows you in your standard street clothes and wearing personal facial identifiers such as glasses.

Color Photo

That 2X2 inch color photo must meet certain standards, including having the right facial angles and size and be no more than six months old. Many opt to have it taken professionally but it is possible to do it yourself. The Department of State has an online photo tool with a link at the website and, in addition, many post offices will provide the same service.

The basic fee goes up regularly so check on line for the current cost. It normally takes from two weeks to two months to receive but for an additional processing and delivery fee, rush orders are possible. The status of your request may be checked on line one week after submission.
