We Take Our vision For Granted Until We Have Problems With Them, So It Is Comforting To Know That medical And Surgical Understanding Of The Human Eye Is Frequently Being Updated And Developed
A lot of us never think about the fact that our eyes are in full working order and we can see clearly enough to live life to the full. But the human eye is an an extremely complicated and delicate bodily organ and we should be very grateful to those medical specialists who look after our sight.
The proper term for the medical discipline relating to the eye is ophthalmology – an merging of two Greek words which directly translate as ‘the science of eyes’. Since the human eye can require both medical and surgical treatment, ophthalmologists are described as specialists in both fields.
As long ago as 800 BCE, those who took an interest had sufficient knowledge of the human eye to manage to diagnose several eye complaints and to have invented effective surgical procedures and equipment to manage to treat some conditions, and throughout the ages scientists and specialists have increased their knowledge of the human eye and discovered treatments for many conditions.
In 1805, the first dedicated ophthalmic hospital was founded in London, and it still exists now under its current title of Moorfields Eye Hospital. The hospital is now a highly regarded centre of excellence for ongoing research to continue to improve the diagnosis and treatment of all illnesses and other problems that could cause trouble for the human eye.
To become an ophthalmologist, a medical student will have to go through several years of intensive specialist training, working in conjunction with qualified ophthalmologists to gain the essential skills before finally becoming a consultant. Many consultant ophthalmologists specialise in eye problems which are of special interest to them and will have specialist clinics for patients with those specific complaints.
Many people really don’t know just how much more an ophthalmologist can do as opposed to the optician who we visit for basic eye tests and for providing the prescription for glasses or contact lenses. But for any problems that require actual surgery – whether a conventional operation or Laser eye surgery, an optician has to refer the individual to an ophthalmologist for treatment.
As soon as a patient is passed on to the expert consultant, many kinds of eye treatments can be suggested. Improvements in technology in recent times mean that the level of diagnosis, and therefore treatment, continues to improve and many surgical treatments now are completed at an outpatients appointment with a local anaesthetic instead of the patient having to check into hospital for a couple of days. Some of the most effective changes have been brought about by the increasing employment of Laser eye treatments, as these basically use the Laser eye beam to treat the affected part of the eye, rather than needing to use actual surgical equipment, which leads to far less likelihood of problems or infection.
A lot of the more unpleasant vision problems can often be affected by other health problems, and so the ophthalmologist will work in association with the other consultants who are providing treatment. And of course, many problems with the eyes like cataracts and glaucoma are often age related, so there has to be a good empathy towards other problems which can impact on an elderly patient – not particularly issues associated with the eye complaint, but issues like mobility or breathing difficulties.
Fortunately, most people live their lives with their only vision problems being the requirement for glasses or contact lenses at some point. But for those who have more complicated eye complaints, it is reassuring to know that treatment is continuing to evolve and improve with every passing year, whether it be more exact Laser eye surgery, more delicate equipment for cataract removal or quicker diagnosis and treatment of more difficult problems.
