Looking At The Earliest Forms Of Bedding Utilised Humans
Many generations back when the human brain was still learning to manipulate the world around it, man did not use bedding. Cavemen would simply sleep on the floor, finding the comfiest place that they could. As the brain developed humans began to realise that they could use the materials around them to improve the comfort of their sleeping conditions. This article examines how the use of bedding in humans developed into the items that we are familiar with today.
Taking the first step
The first step in the evolutionary process of bedding was the use of leaves and twigs. Humans began to lay them on the floor, much like an animal creating a den or nest, to provide extra comfort from the hard ground.
Extra warmth
The second development in human bedding focussed on providing cover to stay warm during the cold nights. Due to the fact that humans were hunter-gatherers at this time; most of their food came from animals which they killed. Somewhere along the line the penny dropped that animal fur provided great warmth and the skinning of animals became common as pelts were used for blankets as well as clothes.
Invention of mattresses and sleeping bags
As human’s brain capacity developed even further complex tools such as the needle were invented. This invention allowed us to sew animal pelts together, which lead to the creation of the first sleeping bag. These sleeping bags were then developed into the first mattresses as humans began to stuff them with materials such as feathers, grass and leaves.
Learning from animals
The creation of bed frames was the final step in the bedding evolution process. Studies suggest that humans saw how other animals, such as apes, used trees to stay safe from predators and off the cold ground. By following this example humans began creating bed frames from vines and branches to provide more elevation for their mattresses.
