Examining The Earliest Forms Of Bedding Used By Human Beings
Many generations back when the human brain was still learning to manipulate the world around it, man did not use bedding. Cavemen would simply sleep on the floor, finding the comfiest place that they could. However, as the brain developed and its capacity expanded, humans started to use materials from the world around them to provide comfort whilst they slept. Read on to discover how the use of bedding developed into something like the items that we are familiar with today.
The first branch
The first step in the evolutionary process of bedding was the use of leaves and twigs. In the same way that animals use them to build nests and dens; humans began putting twigs and leaves on the ground to provide comfort on the hard ground.
Adding warmth
The next step in the development of human bedding focussed on cover as we sought to protect ourselves from the cold nights. Due to the fact that humans were hunter-gatherers at this time; most of their food came from animals which they killed. The realisation that animal fur provided great warmth eventually came and humans began skinning their prey; using the pelts as blankets.
Introduction of sleeping bags and mattresses
As man developed further, more complex tools were invented, such as the needle. This invention allowed us to sew animal pelts together, which lead to the creation of the first sleeping bag. The concept was then taken further by stuffing it with materials such as feathers, twigs and grass to produce a mattress that provided both warmth and comfort.
Following the lead of animals
The final step in the evolution of bedding was the creation of bed frames. It is believed that early humans looked at animals such as apes; that slept in trees to stay safe from predators and off the cold and wet floor. By following this example humans began creating bed frames from vines and branches to provide more elevation for their mattresses.
