A Look At Ringworm in Humans
Ringworm in humans (also known as tinea) refers to a superficial fungal infection that involves the body, scalp, feet, and nails. It was believed that a worm causes the infection, which commonly manifests as round, red spots with raised borders. Even if medical advancements denied that worms were the cause of this fungal infection, still the name is being used at present.
Ringworm is contagious and may be transmitted directly through skin-to-skin contact with an infected person or animal, indirectly through the use of an object (such as combs, hats, and clothing) or touching a surface (such as shower mats, bed linens, and pool surfaces) that was previously touched by an infected person or animal, and in rare cases, through contact with soil.
This form of fungi blooms whenever there is heat and moisture. This may be found in different body parts thus the second word of its name refers to its location. Here are the common types of ringworm in humans:
- Tinea barbae is also referred to as barber’s itch. It affects the bearded area of the face and neck, and is usually manifested by swelling, crusting, and itching.
- Tinea capitis is ringworm of the scalp and is most common in children. It causes scaling in the affected area and may cause temporary alopecia (or hair loss).
- Tinea corporis which are found on arms and legs where ring-like spot appears with protruding border and clear center.
- Tinea cruris or commonly known as jock itch which are usually found in the genital area and are characterized by serious itching with matching red rashes, pustules and vesicles on the surroundings.
- Tinea pedis is ringworm of the feet, commonly affecting the folds in between toes. It is popularly termed as athlete’s foot, which can either be presented as a white macerated area or with dry, itchy scales.
- Tinea unguium or ringworms found in fingernails or toenails resulting from tinea pedis, diabetes or ill-fitting shoes.
Proper diagnosis must be done first so that effective remedy can be provided. Before any ringworm diagnosis, the patient must be examined thoroughly by a dermatologist first. Ringworm in humans can be avoided by treating with antifungal treatments and by not sharing personal objects with affected persons and by wearing loose clothing to minimize sweating and moisture.
