Article Readings About Human ringworm

Ringworms are infections due to fungi that usually affect the body, scalp, feet and nails. Worms were believed to have caused the infection which is shown as raised round, red spots. Even if medical advancements denied that worms were the cause of this fungal infection, still the name is being used at present.

Ringworm is contagious and may be transmitted directly through skin-to-skin contact with an infected person or animal, indirectly through the use of an object (such as combs, hats, and clothing) or touching a surface (such as shower mats, bed linens, and pool surfaces) that was previously touched by an infected person or animal, and in rare cases, through contact with soil.

This form of fungi blooms whenever there is heat and moisture. This may be found in different body parts thus the second word of its name refers to its location. Here are the common types of ringworm in humans:

- Tinea barbae, also known as barber’s itch which usually appears on the hairy parts of the face and neck characterized by swelling, crusting and itching.

- Tinea capitis, a ringworm commonly found in the scalp of children which causes scaling of the affected area and temporary hair loss.

- Tinea corporis which are characterized by ring-like spot with clear center and raised border usually found on arms and legs.

- Tinea cruris also known as jock itch which is manifested by severe itching of the groins and contains pustules and vesicles on the outside with red rashes.

- Tinea pedis is ringworm of the feet, commonly affecting the folds in between toes. It is popularly termed as athlete’s foot, which can either be presented as a white macerated area or with dry, itchy scales.

- Tinea unguium which usually affects fingernails or toenails as a result of tinea pedis, diabetes or tight-fitting shoes.

Proper diagnosis must be done first so that effective remedy can be provided. Dermatologist must thoroughly examine the patient first by getting skin samples and making culture tests before giving the diagnosis. Ringworm in humans can be avoided by treating with antifungal treatments and by not sharing personal objects with affected persons and by wearing loose clothing to minimize sweating and moisture.
