eyes Are Essential To Everyone. The Complex Workings Of The Human Eye Are Incredible, But What Happens When They Develop A Fault
The eye is an extraordinary piece of optical equipment and the extent to which it has evolved over a very long period of time to make sure that different variants of animals have the ability to see in accordance with their needs is quite extraordinary. The different vision requirements varied and eyes have evolved over time to make sure that they provide their owner with the right kind of sight for their environment.
At its most basic, an eye detects light and converts it so that it means something to the animal whose eye it is. So how does the human eye in fact work? As you would guess, our eyes are a little more complex than the basic eye. The light reaches the front of the eye, which then uses a diaphragm to amend how bright the light is and points it at a lens to create an image. The image is then made into electrical instructions and delivered to the brain by means of the optic nerve, and then the brain can decide what to do with the information it has collected about what the eye is seeing.
So, in a split second, the human eye will take in what shapes are available to see and what colours those shapes are, and the whole procedure of translating the information so that the brain knows how to react takes so little time we don’t even notice that there is such a process going on.
It is obvious that it is a good idea to take care of your eyes as well as you can, and to remember that things like too much sunshine or spending too much time in front of a computer screen without permitting your eyes a rest can have a negative effect on them. But, just the same as the rest of the human body, the eyes themselves can be, or can become, flawed. Some vision problems may be genetic defects passed on by your parents. Some are caused by or made worse by environmental factors. And some just develop over the years as the human body becomes older. After all, the impact of wear and tear applies just as equally to parts of the body such as the eyes and ears as it does to arms and legs.
The good thing here is that a lot of eye complaints are more easily treated than a damaged spine or worn out knee joints. A huge number of people wear corrective lenses if they are diagnosed with short or long sightedness – both of which can also be treated using Laser eye surgery. These complaints, plus astigmatism, are caused by the front of the eye (the cornea) being slightly the wrong shape so that the light which reaches it becomes distorted and by the time the image is converted and passed on to the brain, the image is out of focus. Since the cornea is an accessible part of the eye it is straighforward to use Laser eye treatment to amend its shape so that it works better.
Other eye problems, such as cataracts and presbyopia usually develop later in life. With a cataract, the eye lens begins to get cloudy so that seeing becomes a problem. Presbyopia is a condition where the lens cannot focus as well as it used to and images which are near to the eyes will be out of focus.
At the moment, the primary solution for a cataract is to remove the cloudy lens completely and replace it with a man-made one. This is a very easy procedure with a very high success rate. Presbyopia, however, is most commonly treated with corrective glasses. However, Laser eye surgery processes are in use that can assist the sufferer, dependent on other health factors connected to the eyes.
So it is good to know that, unlike some parts of the body, the eyes are a relatively simple thing to diagnose and treat to make sure that we can still carry on with our daily activities and be capable of seeing what we are doing. And the numerous treatments available, such as simple reading glasses, contact lenses, surgery and Laser eye treatments, mean that quite often there is even a choice of actions to solve your vision problems.
