Elegant Casa Loma May Be Turned Back Into A Residence

Casa Loma, once a fantastic private castle is now a one of a kind architectural piece of work in Canada. It took 300 workers three years to construct Casa Loma for Sir Henry Pellatt.

When Sir Henry’s monopoly on street lighting in Toronto was removed by the city itself and his company was getting deeper and deeper into debt, Sir Henry’s insolvency forced him to get rid his properties to retrieve some cash. With such splendour and lots of space the house was to become a upscale hotel. Remodelling took place to adjust the property for its new use, but the hotel never really achieved the desired turnover and the entire project broke down after a mere four years.

In 1937, the Kiwanis Club offered to take care of Casa Loma and turned the house into a museum of the history of Sir Henry and the Toronto of his day. Thirty thousand visitors a year come to see this extremely well-known attraction, which proves that the Club had the right idea. The museum pays fees and taxes to the municipal budget and is self supporting, which means it doesn’t take cash from the budget like many visitor attractions have to do.

It has been a shock therefore, to find out that the Council want to take back the castle and have brainstormed a new strategy to make money out of the building, even though the Club is still going strong and is really popular. An interested investor could well get their hands on this exceptional property if it is put on the GTA realty market, but that is guesswork at this point. Another suggestions is that the Council may decide to change the use of the building into separate apartments, if no buyer is interested in buying it.

Casa Loma is indeed a rather modern residence with expansive rooms and supports good living comfort. What’s more, it’s conveniently close to city living, placed right across the road from the Forest Hill neighbourhood.

All of these qualities would make it one of the most popular districts to live in Toronto. And with the recent sale of the $28m most expensive condominium in Toronto, it seems that the demand for luxurious residences is rather strong.

People appreciate the fact that the venue is available to visit and gives a reminder of the history of the industrial revolution. They simply argue that the tourist appeal and historical value of the residence and the cultural value of the expositions inside significantly outweigh the monetary interests of the City.
