Replacing A Stolen Online Passport
A stolen passport requires following a list of legal procedures including the reporting of the theft and an application for a new one. The legal document is issued by the United States Embassy and is necessary if you want to be able to travel abroad. One has to complete a number of designated forms should you experience the event of theft of this essential travel document.
Step 1
Should you become the victim of theft, you must report this event to the Consulate or Embassy. If the situation occurred while still in the United States, you can contact the Passport Services Department in order to report the stolen passport. People who have traveled abroad will need to find the U. S. Consulate or Embassy for the proper legal procedure.
DS-64
The item must be reported as missing which requires the completion of the DS-64 form. The application will require details surrounding the event in which the item was taken from you. When phoning the relevant authorities to complete a report, the travel document will be categorized as invalid and will no longer be able to be used for travel purposes.
Stays Invalid
In instances where the travel booklet has been invalidated and is later found, it cannot be re-validated but must be sent to the State Department for destruction. Individuals traveling internationally will need to find the nearest U. S. Consulate or Embassy. The DS-64 form must be filled out and the State Department notified of your loss.
Accuracy
Ensure that every item has been filled in and all information is correct as this will prevent delays in the processing of the particular forms. Be sure to contact local authorities in determining which forms should be submitted as often a police report will have to be completed with application forms in submission. The report will include details surrounding the theft and should be mailed with relevant documentation to the U. S. Passport Services.
Loss of a Valid Passport
If your legal document was valid at the time that it went missing, the DS-11 and DS-64 forms will have to be completed and submitted together. This is because one will have to apply for a new legal document, which is the reason that the DS-11 form is needed to be completed and delivered to relevant authorities. A number of specific documents are necessary when applying to replace the important travel document.
Identification
One will need to present a certified birth certificate issued in the United States or Certificate of Naturalization. An identification driver license or government issued identification card is necessary as well as 2 photographs that are passport size. A fee is charged when applying for a new legal document and additional charges apply to expedited passports.
Once the item is reported as a stolen passport, it will be invalidated and the document can no longer be used for travel purposes. The application process for obtaining a new legal document requires that you appear in person. The procedure for a stolen passport requires that individuals complete designated forms for reporting the incident and then applying for a new document to replace it. Whether it’s stolen or damaged you can request an expedited damaged U.S. passport if you need it quickly.
